dotEd FAQ

What is dotEd?
dotEd is Art Center's implementation of the Moodle Learning Management System.

What is Moodle?
Moodle is an Open Source Course Mangement and Learning Management System that has been designed by Educators for Education. The focus of the system is to provide Faculty and Students with the tools that they need to Share Information, Collaborate & Communicate, and Assess Learner Performance for classes.

Why BETA?
Art Center is rolling dotEd over the course of 2 years and we are constantly refining and enhancing dotEd to meet the educational needs of our faculty and students. The BETA program for dotEd is summarized as:
  • Phase 1: (Fall 08 - Spring 09) First Pilot of a hosted Moodle site with limited access for a targeted group of Faculty BETA Testers. Training and support contracted out.
  • Phase 2: (Summer 09) dotEd brought in-house, Integrated with local systems such as LDAP, Single Sign On, lynda.com, and iTunes U. Automatic course creation and enrollment was created. Students and Faculty login tied to Inside Login. Additional Faculty BETA testers invited to participate. Dedicated Educational Technologist hired to support Faculty and Students.
  • Phase 3: (Fall 09) All Faculty are welcome to participate in the BETA, all courses created, all students enrolled. Art Center designed ???skin??? created for dotEd to improve look and feel. Continued effort to provide training, support and generate awareness of dotEd. Integration with Inside 1.0, planned integration with Inside 2.0.
  • Go Live! Spring 10.

How do I login to dotEd?
Use the Firefox web browser and go to: http://doted.artcenter.edu . In the upper right corner of the screen click the link for login. When prompted, enter the same username and password that you use to login to Inside.artcenter.edu.

Do I have to use dotEd?
dotEd is currently in BETA at Art Center and thus is not required to be used for every course. However, if a faculty member chooses to use dotEd for a course, Students will need to login to dotEd to access the materials for the course that posted on the system.

Can I access dotEd from home?
Yes! Simply open your web browser and go to http://doted.artcenter.edu .

I'm a faculty member, how can I learn how to build my course on dotEd?
There is a wealth of video based training that has been created specifically for faculty at Art Center. After you login to dotEd, click on the course called 'Educational Technology Resources' The first section of this course has links to custom video training for dotEd and the Lynda.com video training 'Moodle Essential Training for Teachers' that was authored by Art Center's Educational Technologist. You can also contact Chris Mattia directly by sending email to: chris.mattia@artcenter.edu to set up an appointment for one on one training and support.

How are other faculty using dotEd at Art Center?
The faculty who have participated in the dotEd BETA have already used the system to:

  • Provide Instructional Materials to their Students including: Text, Audio, Video, PDFs, Websites, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Keynote, Photoshop, Illustrator files, just to name a few.
  • Conduct Online Assignments
  • Collect and Grade work from students
  • Use the Grade Book to keep students up to date on their current grade status
  • Give a final exam online and have it automatically graded
  • Conduct Online Discussions with Students
  • Post Announcements and Latest News Items to students
  • Communicate with Students
  • Manage Course Calendars
  • Post a Campus Wide Calendar of Events
  • Manage major campus projects and initiatives, Inside 2.0
  • Learn how to use various campus resources including dotEd, lynda.com, iTunes U, etc.

Why are some of my courses listed in Grey?
All courses have been created for all sections, however it is up to the faculty member teaching the class to decide if they want to use dotEd for their course. Therefore, all courses have been created and are set to be not-available to students by default. If you choose to use dotEd for your course watch this video to learn how to turn on access to your course for your students. If you do not want to use dotEd for your course, you do not need to take any action, the course will not appear for your students.

If a student add/drops my class will that change in their schedule show up in dotEd?
Yes! Approximately 24 hrs after a student officially adds/drops a class, dotEd gets updated with current enrollment information directly from the Registrars office. So while that change does not take place immediately, students adding your class should appear in your course the day after the Registrars office processes the schedule change.

Can I email my class with dotEd?
Yes! Simply login to dotEd, click on your class, the in the upper right corner find the 'Latest News Block' and click the link to 'add a new topic...'. Fill out the form, attach any documents you want to send and click send. The message will be sent to your student's official Art Center email account and the message will be posted in the Latest News Section of your dotEd course. No more excuses that the student didn't get the email.

Can I have message from dotEd sent to another email address other than my Art Center email account?
No! The student handbook states that all official communication from Art Center will be sent to the student's @inside.artcenter.edu email address. All communication through dotEd that is sent via email follows this policy.
